Supporting our Beautiful Islands

Great news for our region: we’ve protected more than 140 additional islands in our Great Barrier Reef Marine Park.

Our reef, and our wonderful local islands are the jewels in Queensland’s tourism crown and needs to be protected. In particular, we need to look after the habitat of our green and flatback turtles, seabirds and shorebirds.

Protecting these areas and species will support the continued growth of our nature based tourism industry.

The Reef Arks Program, announced by Premier Steven Miles and Environment Minister Leanne Linard MP helps deliver on that – transferring these 140 islands to Queensland’s protected area estate.
